Instead of featuring just one business of the month during March, we’ve gone “mad” (March Madness…get it?) by featuring several businesses in the town of Howe.
Last week I wrote about Italian restaurant gem, just off the town square, Iannarelli’s (Click here to see that blog).
I’m so sure that once you arrive in Howe, you might just want to spend the night, not because there’s so much to do, but because less than five minutes from the Town Square resides one of the most peaceful bed and breakfasts around.
Village View Bed and Breakfast
Just prior to Christmas last year, I wrote a longer blog giving detail to this patch of heaven on earth (click here to read a previous blog). Village View is part of Northern Indiana’s Art and Earth Trail, Shipshewana loop. Karen Weiland, who owns the B & B, shared a few other stories with me that I am passing on here, along with a short video showing off a few of the rooms (including the great outdoors, a huge living room in and of itself).
About the name “Village View”
Karen writes, “The guys (my husband, his father and his brother) all referred to the farmland as Village View because it was so close to Howe which they viewed as a village. So when it came time to name the B and B it just fit for us. There are times I think we should have named it Windy Hill. There is almost always a breeze here.”
About the “Upson Room”
Karen named each of the three bedrooms after a family who previously lived in the farmhouse, which was built in 1829. Karen shares this story about the “family bedroom” that has a large queen bed and two twin beds.
Incidentally, each of the three bedrooms has its own private bath with special touches such as the sink being made out of antique sewing machine tables.
Karen shares this story about the Upson Room: “One of the gals who grew up here, her name was Susan Curtis. She said this was her room. After I had the carpet laid, she told me there were some loose boards in the floor that she would hide her love letters in. The gal we bought the house from verified the story. Had I known this story prior to laying carpet, I definitely would not have covered these floors.”
About Karen’s Special Friends
Karen talked briefly about a unique furry family: “We have an albino squirrel population here. One comes and sits on the feeder attached to the window there. You can get close and he will not run away. The other day I saw a small one, so I know there are babies here too. You don’t see an albino squirrel every day.”
About Karen Weiland, the Owner
Karen is a gracious host who pays attention to the little things in her bed and breakfast. Not only that, Karen also partners with the LaGrange County Convention & Visitors Bureau to offer the Barn Quilt Tour to the public. Karen has done much of the painting herself at Howe Military School.
One mural is near Village View, at a farm. The mural is painted in the colors of International Harvester tractors.
