Shipshewana, IN - The first Saturday in February observes Shipshewana's annual Pajama Sale. With shops opening as early as 5 am, men and women are invited to attend this free event.

Over 100 retailers in Shipshewana participate in the all-day event. The festivities draw not just local people, but also shoppers from surrounding states.

Many stores will run 20%-50% discounts for those customers who shop in their pajamas. The earlier the arrival, the deeper the discounts run.

Joanna King, one of the originators of the event, reports that literally thousands of people attended last year's sale.

"It used to be just girlfriends coming. Now entire families come, groups come, couples come. They come in their pajamas and stay all day," King said.

"It's a great time of the year to get rid of the winter blahs while supporting the ma and pa stores. The sale is a terrific way to keep the local economy going."

King said the Pajama Sale has been a mid-winter celebration for at least fifteen years.

Beth Thornburg, Director of the LaGrange County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said many people choose to stay overnight at one of the local hotels, lodges, and bed and breakfast establishments. "Many people make a weekend celebration of this special experience," she said. "Given all the laughter heard throughout the town, they have a great time."

The event also has been highlighted in the January/February 2011 Issue of Midwest Living magazine.
