Evening of music and stories in Shipshewana

September 9, 2010, Shipshewana, IN -

The newly created Center for Traditional Arts presents Jon Kay, Dulcimer Player & Folklorist

Monday September 13, 7:00 pm at the Third Floor Theater in the Davis Mercantile. Enjoy an evening of music and stories with folklorist and musician Jon Kay. An award winning dulcimer player and interpreter, Kay has been a student of oral traditions his entire life. He listened to old-timers tell stories about hoop snakes, pet catfish and other fantastic folk tales and lies that captured his young imagination. In this hour-long performance, he will share stories and music, but also talk about the musicians, storytellers that inspired his life’s work. Kay is the director for Traditional Arts of Indiana, and will be in the Shipshewana in the upcoming week to videotape and photograph local artisans.

There is no admission charge for the concert, but donations are accepted. The concert is a fundraiser for the new Center for Traditional Arts, opened this summer under the direction of Cliff Pequet, master leather worker and boot maker. The center is home to various craftspeople that handcraft and sell their wares on site. Visitors will see the trades of the silversmith, engraver, shoe and bootmaker, coppersmith, dulcimer maker, and muzzle loading rifle maker.

Mountain Dulcimer Workshop with Jon Kay

John Kay will also hold a dulcimer workshop later this month (the exact date is yet to be determined) at the center at 160 Morton St., along with area dulcimer players Nancy Blough and Freeman Miller. To register for the workshop or for more information, contact Cliff Pequet at 574-596-1022.

For more information about the concert or workshops, contact Cliff Pequet at 574-596-1022, or the LaGrange County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 800.254.8090.
